Tips for Planning a Boating Trip
Heading out for a pleasure cruise in your boat is an amazing way to spend a sunny afternoon on the water. Take in the refreshing ocean air and build memories with friends and family that you won’t soon forget! You can opt to swim, sunbathe, fish, tow watersports crafts, or simply chat with friends and family while you cruise along the open water.
Any successful marine excursion requires an element of planning to go off without a hitch, though. There are several steps you’ll want to take to prepare yourself and your vessel, and it can be easy to overlook something important if you’re not sure what needs doing.
Pack Smart
Temperatures on the water will always be several degrees cooler than on land. Even a hot summer day might turn chilly if you’re out far enough, particularly if you choose to swim. Pack extra clothing for everyone to change into after swimming, along with blankets and towels. Children are particularly vulnerable to cold, so make sure they dry off and get changed as soon as they leave the water, and have them wear long sleeves, pants and socks along with a jacket or sweater to keep them warm. You may also wish to have rain gear like ponchos on hand in case the weather turns.
Bring Safety Gear
It’s vital that you keep your boat stocked with important safety equipment so you won’t be caught unawares in an emergency situation. For starters, every passenger on board needs to wear a life jacket, and there should be a throwable life ring or flotation device to assist anyone who falls overboard. You’ll also want to have a fire extinguisher, a compass, and a waterproof map along with your GPS, your phone with charger, signal flares, an emergency radio, and a well-stocked first aid kit for addressing injuries and illnesses that crop up on the water.
Food and Water
When you’re out on your boat for a while, inevitably you’ll get hungry and want something to snack on. You’ll also want to make sure everyone stays hydrated, particularly if you’re out in the hot sun for hours. Pack some non-messy, high-energy snacks like trail mix, nuts, cheese sticks, jerky, sandwiches, fresh fruit, and yogurt in a cooler. Bring a trash bag for the wrappers and make sure to keep them contained so you don’t litter. Make sure there is water available for everyone.
You may also wish to pack some lighter foods for addressing seasickness. Comfort should be a priority and this will go a long way towards keeping your passengers happy.
