Pickwick Lake

Right up against the Tennessee border, you can enjoy some time on Pickwick Lake in Pickwick Landing State Park. There are two public boat ramps and a marina that even loans out supplies and different types of boats. You’ll find a number of different species, including Sauger and White and Yellow Bass for this time of year. If you need to stretch your legs on land, there are also a lot of other great outdoor activities you can enjoy, like hiking, biking, and bird watching, plus camping and other overnight options to help comfortably extend your stay.

Lake Guntersville

You can also check out Lake Guntersville while you’re near the border. Both the landscape and the lake are stunning to behold and even if you don’t catch a single thing, you’ll be glad you visited this area. The Lake Guntersville Resort State Park offers 6,000 acres of natural woodlands with activities that include an 18-hole championship golf course, the Screaming Eagle Zipline, a beach complex, an outdoor nature center, 36 miles of trails, and, of course, excellent fishing opportunities on Alabama’s largest lake. It even plays host to a convention center, if your business is looking for a place to plan a retreat. Also, make sure you look up from the lake every once in a while. Conservation efforts have successfully revived the bald eagle population and you might just see one soaring high above.

Wheeler Lake

In Joe Wheeler State Park, you’ll find Wheeler Lake, a favorite spot among some of the most dedicated fishing enthusiasts. It’s even home to a number of fishing tournaments throughout the year. But even if you need a break from fishing, there are a lot of great reasons to visit Wheeler Lake, if only because it’s a beautiful area to sit back and relax and enjoy the great outdoors. There’s so much to do in the area, from antiquing to hiking, so there’s something for everyone to do. You might love the area so much that you’ll want to contact some of the local real estate offices about getting yourself a vacation home.

Fort Morgan Peninsula

For an unforgettable all-around experience, head as far south as the state will let you go to the Fort Morgan Peninsula. First established in the early 1800s, this area was home to Fort Bowyer to defend American soil from the British, until Fort Morgan was officially completed in 1834, named for the Revolutionary War hero, General Daniel Morgan.

Today, it’s filled with a fantastic array of things to do for both locals and visitors. Visit the historic Fort Morgan for a look into how the area played its part throughout the early years of the nation. Explore the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge for an up-close look at the state’s native wildlife populations. And bring your boat along to experience off-shore fishing, and even ask about fishing charters that can take you to the heart of some of the biggest schools of fish.

These are just a few of our favorites, but we want to hear about some of yours!
