Cooking Aboard Your Boat
Taking time out of a busy day to cruise on the water is a great way to unwind and get away from everything for a while. But what if you get hungry while you’re on your voyage? We here at L&M Marine know how important a full stomach is for both boat safety and relaxation, so we’ve put together some tips for cooking on your boat! If you want to know more, or you want to see the boats we have for sale, contact our store in Stapleton, Alabama, today.
Deck Grilling
If your boat is on the smaller side, it’s not likely to have its own galley. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to bring your own appliances! One of the best ways to cook up a nice meal on your boat is a marine grill. These come in all shapes and sizes—some attach directly to the side of your craft, others sit on a pedestal, and still others can just be plopped down on any heat-resistant surface.
A VertiGrill can enhance your marine grill, adding vertical skewers that transfer heat up through the rod and into the food speared on them. That way you can make some nice kebabs and still have plenty of room for your fresh-caught fish!
Efficient Storage
It can be hard to fit all the utensils and ingredients you’ll want on a smaller boat. Your livewell can be useful, but otherwise all you’re likely to have is a cooler for food storage. For longer voyages or more options, canned food in smaller packages can be a great solution. With less food you’re less likely to need somewhere to store leftovers. That can draw in pests aplenty, and that’s the last thing you want aboard.
You may also want to prepare things in advance when possible. There’s limited prep space on a boat, so make your pasta salad or mixed greens beforehand. Of course, if you have a minifridge or small microwave aboard, your options multiply!
Stay Safe
There’s plenty of risk to even these methods. Choppy waters and high winds can knock over unsecured grills along with their piping-hot contents, which can cause injuries or even start a fire. Make sure it’s stable and secure, wherever it is, and that you have a first aid kit and fire extinguisher on hand. For propane grills, turn off the gas when it’s not needed.
Any sharp implements should be used before setting off and stored securely while you’re on the water, including knives. Spoons or sporks can substitute for forks to decrease the sharp points on board. Make sure foods cool before serving.
